My friend and colleague, an elementary guidance counselor in Cranston, told me a heart wrenching story of a middle school boy trying to create one last special Christmas for his dying mother. Three children, two in elementary school and one in middle, have been struggling with a mother riddled with cancer for months. Recently a bone marrow transplant was performed but with no positive results and she has been given only a few short months to live. The eldest boy wrote Gem Plumming asking for money to buy his mom and dad a few special gifts for christmas (a back massager for her tumor filled back and Derek Jeter cologne for his father) My friend upon hearing his story, immediately rallied the teaches and staff at Eden Park Elementary school to contribute and raise enough funds to purchase these gifts and present them to the boy at his school. The counselor has an enourmous heart and spent hours arranging searching the city for the cologne (Derek Jeter not being so popular in these parts!) and the back massager. SHe would never want this kind of attention for herself ... but I know agonized over our good fortune and the immense pain and suffering this family is enduring right now. From what I understand they are barely making ends meet - and I imagine that Christmas will be a very sad and painful day. Perhaps Gem can step in at the last minute with a few gifts to add a little sunshine in their lives.
